For pleasant dreams, use the herb valerian. This herb contains a substance that helps people relax and fall asleep. A study involving 75 people who have chronic insomnia was conducted in Germany.
Some took valerian, while others took insomnia medicines 30 minutes before bedtime. The herb also worked as well as medicines and had fewer side effects. Another study found that valerian also helped people who could not sleep due to stress.
Dosage: Take half a teaspoon of liquid extract in a glass of water at dinner and again before going to bed. Leave the bottle by the bed and if you wake up during the night, take another teaspoon.
Find a liquid extract made from the fresh valerian root that is better than tablets or a liquid extract made from dried valerian. Do not take this herb if you have drunk more than one or two glasses of wine with dinner, as alcohol can increase the herb’s effects. Also, to cure insomnia entirely, avoid chemicals that disrupt sleep, such as nicotine, caffeine and alcohol while consuming valerian.
Some people may become more stimulated and energetic than calm by taking valerian. Stop taking it if you have started to feel nervous. Consult a doctor before taking it if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
